Stories rooted in the fullness of Black life — the joy and the grief, the Sunday morning and the long goodbye. Books that feel like home and tell the truth at the same time.

Some stories take years to reach the page. Some take longer to reach the right hands.
Roanoke & Kin is an independent publishing imprint built on the belief that Black stories, told fully and honestly, belong in the world. Named for the roots on both sides of our founder’s family, we publish books that feel like memory. Like Sunday morning. Like the conversation you needed to have but never knew how to start. This is where those books live.
Roanoke & Kin is rooted in Black Southern tradition and the fullness of everyday Black life. We tell stories of joy, humor, memory, and belonging. Stories that feel like cocoa butter and Sunday supper and somebody who knows your name. We publish so that Black readers feel seen, held, and at home on every page.

What does it cost to walk in someone else’s truth?

Some people run to escape. Some things are built to catch them.

One more chance. One real question: is it worth it?
Some things survive us. Some things we survive.
She survived her mother’s murder. She survived Brendan’s suicide. Now she has to survive the truth.
Lauren Washington has spent her life outrunning her grief. Growing up in Bankhead after her mother was shot and killed, she learned that the only safe place for her pain was the pages of a diary. Now at 26, she’s DJ Mystique, one of Atlanta’s top radio personalities, and everything looks perfect from the outside.
But when Lauren begins investigating her mother’s unsolved murder, the people closest to her start acting like they have something to hide. Then her boyfriend of eight years commits suicide, and the double life he leaves behind forces Lauren to confront not just his secrets, but every truth she has been keeping from herself.
Survived By is a debut relaunch from Roanoke & Kin (originally published as Suicide Diaries) now fully reclaimed and rereleased by the author on her own terms.
Survived By doesn’t end at the last page. The music, the mood, the questions it leaves behind, they’re all part of the experience. This space is for readers who want to sit with the story a little longer.
“The songs that live inside this story.”
We’re early and we’re intentional. If you’re interested in media, partnerships, or events, we’d love to hear from you.
